A 9 year old boy, Christopher Summers, from Plumstead (Cape Town) died on another Quad “ATV” Bike accident at the Macassar Mine.

Christopher had the necessary safety gear on him but it still didn’t prevent him from the head injury he died from when his Quad “ATV” Bike fell on him.

Members from the local emergency unit, traffic department & victims of the accident now want taking action to reduce such Quad “ATV” Bike fatalities.

Quad “ATV” biking is a ever increasing & popular sport amongst South Africans & this is why so many fatalities and injuries get reported the past two years.

Cielie Farow, RTMC, says that there isn’t enough Quad “ATV” Bike Accidents statistics available yet as its still classified under “Motorbike Accidents”.

Cielie also said that riders under estimates the Quad “ATV Bike turning capabilities & this leads to many fatal injuries as the Quad “ATV” Bike tend to fall on riders when they misjudge a turn. At present there isn’t any Law regulating this sport.  Quad “ATV” Bikes are not allowed on municipal roads.

Adv. Johan Jonck from the www.arrivealive.co.za website, says that Quad “ATV” Bike Accidents is still a growing problem & NETCARE 911 reports that they attending to more of such accidents than ever before.

The fact that the Quad “ATV” Bike has four wheels and therefore one would think that its very stable, is where most riders or casual riders make the critical mistake, because of the four wheels it’s a much more unstable vehicle than the two wheels version.

Many accidents do occur during fun trips and or with tour guides, make sure that your tour guide have the correct medical kits and also that all tourist riding on such Quad “ATV” Bike trips, do wear the correct safety equipment like protective clothes, race quality boots, gloves, long pants & shirts along with a good quality ATV Jacket at all times & riders should be “Safety Conscience”.
