Quad ATV Bikes to buy at R40,000?

Question from Karl: "Could I pls get advice on what is the best quad for trails not racing. I am looking to by a quad in price range of R40 000. Is second hand option? or cheaper non big brand names? or should I just save and go for the big boys (renegade). Thanks..."

Answer: You don’t say much about you age, high, weight or experience (which should all influence your final choice for a quad) – therefore just a general opinion:

Doing trails only, a utility quad bike would probably suit best. You are looking for reliability, versatility and a quad that is both tough and smooth. Utility’s offers all this as they provide a comfortable ride (and has a carrier for goodies) but most important, has the ability to conquer most off-road conditions. 4x4 quads is mostly a bit more expensive as their 2x4 equals, but are highly recommended for their extra ability.

You would probable want to take a look at some of the following options for a utility quad :

·         Kawasaki KVF360 Automatic (2x4 and 4x4) - 4x4 Highly recommended !

·         Suzuki Eiger LTF400F Semi Automatic (4x4)

·         Arctic Cat 366 Automatic (4x4)

·         Honda TRX350FM (4x4)

·         Yamaha Bruin 350 (4x4)

·         Polaris

These are just some of your choices and there also other well known brands available but be careful of so called “gray products”. Buying a new quad, you will get a guarantee on the engine and the dealer should provide you with advise and after sales service. You will probably have to spend a bit more than R40 000 for the above range but there are cheaper utilities with less engine capacities available.

The Suzuki Vinson 500 4x4 Auto is a good choice.  Suzuki is a very reliable quad and the brand has proven themselves time and again.

The BSI 250 Streak Utility is unknown to me and I can therefore not comment on this quad.

Have you taken a Can-Am (Bombardier) Outlander 400XT, 800 or the Traxter 500 A 4x4 for a test drive  …… If not – you’d better get out there soon !

And while you’re visiting a Can-Am dealer, be sure to take a look at the Outlander Max 400XT or 800 Max double seater – Mrs Karl will love it  !!

Should you consider a second hand quad, be sure to buy from a respectable dealer/owner.  Obtain the quad’s history and service record and speak to the relevant people. You can always take someone along with technical experience to have a look at the quads engine and accessories on your behalf.

Remember, your safety gear is just as important and never ride without being protected. Know all your quad’s features and learn how to ride and handle it the correct way. Know what your machine can do and know your own limitations. Thereby you will always have fun and a safe ride.

Last but not least, start saving for your Renegade !  Quoted : “ A rider’s dream.  A thrill seeker’s fix. An engineer’s aspiration. The Renegade gives hardcore enthusiasts exactly what they’ve been looking for – unmatched power, precise handling, extreme terrain access and a lifetime ticket to the ultimate rush !” Believe me that’s so true – my colleague owns one !

Good luck and keep us informed...
