The Perfect Wheelie

Like anything a perfect wheelie is something that must be learned and practised to perfection. It is like learning to walk, you can’t just do it!

For those of you that want to do a perfect wheelie, I can say now, if you are not really determined to wheelie your ATV or BIKE, you will never get it right…..

So for those of you that really want to wheelie like a pro, just follow my easy steps. Before I start, let me add this - once you can wheelie many new doors will open for you. Let me explain: Your confidence and skills will improve with a 1000%. Once you are there you will be able to do steep down hills and up hills not to mention the big factor which is FEAR. Fear in off road racing is our biggest enemy. If you are scared you are lost. Many people think that off road dudes are mad and fearless, but in fact we are not. We are just in control, and that is the big secret to any sport. Be in control and then you will know exactly what you do…

So how do you beat fear???

It is easy!!! You have to start small. So get a small ATV (Blaster)

  • Step one.
Learn to flip your ATV. This might sound mad but in fact is the main step to overcome the fear of flipping your ATV.  Kit yourself heavily with elbow guards, knee guards, boots, helmet, chest protector, and old riding pants.  Now flip your ATV. Try to just let the grab bar skid on the ground. Let a friend pick up the front wheels wile not moving to get the feeling. Once you get to flip it, try to kick the ATV back on its wheels while lying on your back.

This is your main step and cannot be skipped. Try doing it on a tar road, because you have the same traction on every attempt, so you will learn quicker. This step might keep you busy for several days, and remember it is done in a sitting position. Don’t worry about the balancing point now. Once you can flip you Blaster (ATV) effortlessly you are ready for the next step. The better and safer you can flip the better your wheelie will be.

  • Step Two
Now that you are no longer scared to flip your quad you can start thinking while your front wheels are in the air. Just before flipping counter the ATV by using your rear brake. Let the forward momentum tilt you wheels back to the road. So every time just before flipping you will counter the flip with your rear brake. The harder you will step on your brake the quicker your front wheels will hit the road. So be easy on the brake. The trick here is to step on the brake just hard enough so that the quad does not flip.  Remember you don’t have to worry if it flips because you know what do if it flips (step one). This scenario must be in first gear.

  • Step Tree
Accelerate in first gear and get your wheels in the air, now decelerate while stepping firmly on the rear brake. Then accelerate again followed by braking again. This sequence must be practiced over and over again until perfection.
At first the ATV will go up and down. Don’t worry - you are on the right track.
As you get used to the accelerate, braking sequence you wheelie will smooth out.

Now it is time for practice, practice and more practice. If you work hard it will take you no more than 2 months.

Once you can wheelie your blaster and can no longer flip it, your confidence will increase. Remember the same principle are used on all quads, bikes, and road bikes. Soon you will be able to wheelie any ATV or Bike

Once you can wheelie your blaster and can no longer flip it your confidence will increase. Remember the same principles is used on all quads, bikes and road bikes. Soon you will be able to wheelie any ATV or Bike.

Hope to see you on your back wheels soon!
